ON TITLE IX

Honoring the 50th Anniversary of Title IX

June 23, 2022

For 50 years, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 has stood as a cornerstone of equal access to education. From its start, it paved the way for generations of women to enroll in institutions of higher education with the promise of equal opportunity, protection, and resources. As efforts towards greater inclusivity have progressed, we have seen interpretation expand to include sexual orientation and gender identity, a testament to the comprehensive impact of Title IX.

Yet, we know there is still more work to do. The work to ensure inclusivity on campuses and dismantle systemic barriers is vital to extending the full potential of Title IX in all areas of higher education. While women now comprise the majority of students enrolled in colleges and universities, we know that sexual violence is still pervasive and the distribution of resources is not always equal in practice. To deliver on the full promise of Title IX, policies and practices that advance equity in admission, hiring, promotion, sexual misconduct proceedings, and resource allocation must be enacted.

The impact of Title IX has reached far beyond education, increasing employment opportunities and financial independence regardless of gender, and bolstering recognition of women in athletics. As we honor the 50th anniversary of this landmark federal policy, we recommit to elevating and defending policies that center equity and increase opportunity in every aspect of higher education.
